Dahmane El Harrachi - دحمان الحرّاشي

Dahmane El Harrachi was an Algerian singer, songwriter and banjo player, born in 1926 in the Bab El Oued area of Algiers to a family of Chaoui origin, later settling in the Harrach district — the source of his stage name. He became one of the defining voices of chaâbi music, a genre rooted in Algerian and North African popular tradition, blending sung poetry with the resonant, percussive tones of the banjo.

He spent significant time performing among the Algerian immigrant community in France, where his music captured the longing and displacement of North African workers abroad — themes that reached their fullest expression in his most famous song, «Ya Rayah» (1973), a meditation on emigration and homesickness that went on to be covered across the Arab world and beyond, becoming one of the most recognized songs in Algerian musical history.

Beyond «Ya Rayah», his catalog includes «Mazalni Maak», «Wallahi Madrit» and «Khabbi Serrek», songs that showcase his gift for wistful, conversational lyricism paired with spare, hypnotic instrumentation. Dahmane El Harrachi died in 1980 in Algiers following a traffic accident, leaving behind a body of work that remains central to the chaâbi tradition and to Algeria's musical identity.
