Cutting Crew

Cutting Crew are an English rock band formed in London in 1985, fronted by singer-guitarist Nick Van Eede. Emerging in the mid-1980s alongside a wave of polished, synth-tinged rock acts, the band built their sound around soaring vocal melodies, chiming guitars and the widescreen production typical of the era, aiming for arena-ready choruses rather than pure new-wave minimalism.

Their debut album «Broadcast» (1986) became a global success on the strength of «(I Just) Died in Your Arms», a power ballad that topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the defining soft-rock hits of the decade, later covered and sampled by numerous artists across pop and hip-hop. Follow-up singles from the same album, including «I’ve Been in Love Before» and «One for the Mockingbird», reinforced the band’s reputation for emotionally direct, melodically strong songwriting.

While Cutting Crew never fully replicated that initial commercial peak, they continued releasing material and touring over subsequent decades, with Van Eede remaining the band’s consistent creative anchor through various lineup changes. Their legacy rests largely on «(I Just) Died in Your Arms» as a genre-defining single, but the broader «Broadcast» album is remembered as a well-crafted example of mid-80s British rock aimed squarely at international radio.
