Cults

Cults are an American indie pop duo formed in New York City in 2010, built around the songwriting partnership of Brian Oblivion (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Madeline Follin (lead vocals). Their sound blends fuzzy 1960s girl-group pop and Wall of Sound-style orchestration with lo-fi bedroom production, layering Follin's bright, breathy vocals over reverb-drenched guitars and vintage samples.

The duo broke out with their self-titled 2011 debut album, released after early singles like «Go Outside» and «Abducted» spread online, drawing comparisons to acts such as Best Coast and The Ronettes for their nostalgic, sun-bleached melancholy. Follow-up records continued to refine this dreamy, hazy pop palette while incorporating more electronic textures.

Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin were a couple during the making of the first album and later separated, but continued to write and perform together as Cults, maintaining the band's distinctive vocal interplay and retro-pop identity across subsequent releases.
