Corneille

Corneille, born Cornelius Nyungura, is a Canadian singer-songwriter born in West Germany to Rwandan parents. He spent much of his childhood in Rwanda, where he survived the 1994 genocide, an experience that claimed the lives of members of his immediate family. In 1997 he relocated to Quebec, Canada, where he built his music career, singing primarily in French while drawing on English-language influences as well.

His sound is rooted in American soul and funk, shaped by the influence of artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Prince, filtered through a smooth, radio-friendly pop-R&B sensibility that made him one of the most successful French-language artists of his generation. His songs frequently carry themes of resilience, faith, love, and hope, a tone that stands in deliberate contrast to the trauma of his early life.

Corneille became a major star in Francophone markets with hits such as «Parce qu'on vient de loin» and «Seul au monde», and has remained a consistent presence in French-language pop and R&B for over two decades, respected both for his vocal warmth and for the personal depth behind his catalog.
