About the artist
Coil were an English experimental and industrial music group formed in 1982 by John Balance and his partner Peter «Sleazy» Christopherson, the latter a former member of Throbbing Gristle. The duo, later expanded with additional collaborators, became one of the most influential acts in underground electronic and industrial music, known for their occult and esoteric interests, which deeply informed their lyrics, imagery, and conceptual approach.
Coil's sound moved fluidly across industrial, ambient, and electronic textures, resisting easy genre classification across a prolific and constantly evolving discography. Albums and tracks such as «Love's Secret Domain», «The Anal Staircase», and «Ostia (The Death of Pasolini)» showcased their willingness to blend dark, ritualistic atmospheres with moments of unexpected melodicism and dance-influenced production.
The group's work was deeply intertwined with the personal and creative partnership between Balance and Christopherson, and their releases often explored themes of mysticism, sexuality, death, and altered states of consciousness. Coil's influence extended widely across industrial, dark ambient, and experimental electronic scenes, cementing their status as a cult act whose work continues to be studied and referenced long after Balance's death in 2004.
