About the artist

Cocteau Twins were a Scottish band formed in Grangemouth in 1979, built around Robin Guthrie’s guitar, Elizabeth Fraser’s otherworldly, largely non-lexical vocals, and, from the mid-1980s, Simon Raymonde’s bass and arrangements. Signed to the influential 4AD label, they became one of the defining acts of the label’s ethereal, atmospheric sound, alongside acts like Dead Can Dance.

Their music is known for lush, reverb-drenched guitar textures and Fraser’s singing, which often prioritized emotional tone and sound over intelligible lyrics, giving songs like «Sea, Swallow Me» and «Bloody and Blunt» a dreamlike, almost liturgical quality. This approach helped define what critics later termed «dream pop» and «shoegaze»-adjacent atmospherics, and Fraser also lent her voice to outside collaborations, most notably with Massive Attack.

The band released a string of albums through the 1980s and 1990s before splitting in 1997 amid personal and creative tensions between Guthrie and Fraser. Their influence is widely cited by later shoegaze and dream-pop bands, including Slowdive, Lush, and My Bloody Valentine, cementing Cocteau Twins as a foundational act in ethereal and atmospheric rock.
