Clark Gesner

Clark Gesner was an American composer, lyricist, and performer best remembered as the creator of the musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, which brought the world of Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip to the stage. Working from Schulz’s beloved characters — Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, and the rest of the gang — Gesner wrote both the music and lyrics, crafting a warm, wistful, character-driven score that became a defining piece of American musical theater built around childhood, insecurity, and gentle humor.

The show premiered off-Broadway in 1967 and became an enduring staple of community, school, and regional theater, prized for songs like «Happiness» and «My New Philosophy» that captured the emotional lives of its comic-strip characters with sincerity rather than irony. Gesner himself originated the role of Snoopy in early productions, adding a performer’s sensibility to a score he had built from the inside out.
