CityAlight

CityAlight is the worship ministry of St Paul's Anglican Church in Castle Hill, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Rather than a conventional band built around individual artists, it functions as a church-based songwriting and recording collective, led by Rich Vassallo, with original songs written predominantly by Rich Thompson and Jonny Robinson alongside a rotating group of volunteer musicians who hold full-time jobs outside the ministry.

The group's guiding aim is theological clarity delivered through musical simplicity: songs built on singable, accessible melodies that carry dense, carefully considered doctrinal content, deliberately avoiding spectacle so that the focus stays on the message rather than the performers. This approach has made CityAlight one of the most widely sung contemporary worship sources in English-speaking evangelical churches, with songs like «Yet Not I but Through Christ in Me», «Christ Is Mine Forevermore», and «Jesus, Strong and Kind» becoming congregational standards well beyond Australia.

Stylistically the music draws on contemporary pop and soft rock arrangements — piano and guitar-driven, anthemic without being ornate — in service of texts centered on grace, Christ's sufficiency, and the goodness of God, as heard in «Only a Holy God», «God Is for Us», «Ancient of Days», and «The Goodness of Jesus». The group's insistence on staying out of the spotlight, letting churches worldwide adopt and record their own versions of the songs, has been central to their reach.
