CHVRCHES are a Scottish synth-pop trio formed in Glasgow in 2011, made up of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty. The unusual spelling of their name was chosen partly for practical reasons — to stand out in web searches — rather than for any religious meaning. Mayberry's clear, emotive vocals sit atop layered analogue and digital synths crafted by Cook and Doherty, both veterans of the Glasgow music scene before forming the band.

The group built momentum quickly after posting early singles like «Lies» online, drawing attention for a sound that blended 1980s synth-pop influences with contemporary electronic production. Their debut album, The Bones of What You Believe, introduced anthemic tracks such as «The Mother We Share» and «Recover», establishing a template of soaring choruses over icy, propulsive electronics.

Across subsequent albums CHVRCHES pushed their sound in slightly heavier and more pop-oriented directions while retaining their core synth-driven identity, and Mayberry became known for speaking out on issues like online harassment and gender equality in the music industry. Songs such as «Clearest Blue», «Leave a Trace», and «Get Out» cemented their reputation as one of the most consistent acts in modern synth-pop.
