Chumbawamba

Chumbawamba were an English band from Leeds who emerged in the early 1980s out of the anarcho-punk scene, initially playing under the name Chimp Eats Banana. Over the following years they moved away from straightforward punk toward a broader, more eclectic sound that folded in folk, indie rock, electronic textures and hip-hop influences, all while keeping an explicitly political, anarchist outlook at the core of their songwriting.

The band's move to a major label, EMI, was controversial within the punk and anarchist communities that had nurtured them, provoking backlash from former peers. That deal nonetheless produced their biggest and most enduring success, «Tubthumping (I Get Knocked Down)», which became a global hit and introduced Chumbawamba's blend of chant-like hooks and working-class defiance to a mainstream audience far beyond their original scene.

Rather than chase a repeat of that success, the group stayed committed to their politics, addressing subjects like fascism, war and anarchism in songs such as «The Day The Nazi Died» and «Give the Anarchist a Cigarette», and eventually left EMI to return to independent labels. They continued recording and performing for years afterward, exploring folk and a cappella directions, before disbanding in 2012 after a long and unusually varied career.
