Chita Rivera

Chita Rivera, born Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero on January 23, 1933, was an American actress, dancer and singer of Puerto Rican and Scottish-Irish descent, widely regarded as one of the defining stars of Broadway's golden age of musical theater. Trained in ballet from age eleven at the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet, she made her Broadway debut in 1951's Call Me Madam and went on to originate iconic roles including Anita in West Side Story, a part that showcased both her dance virtuosity and her voice on numbers like «America».

Her career spanned decades of landmark musicals, including Bye Bye Birdie and Can-Can, and later the role of Velma Kelly in the original production of Chicago, where she performed showstoppers such as «All That Jazz» and «Cell Block Tango». She also starred in Kiss of the Spider Woman, lending her name and voice to its title number, and appeared in West Side Story staples like «Tonight (Quintet and Chorus)» and «A Boy Like That / I Have a Love».
