Chic

Chic is an American band formed in New York City in 1972 by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards, who built the group around a tight, interlocking rhythm section and a sophisticated, understated musicianship rare in dance music of the era. Alongside drummer Tony Thompson and rotating vocalists, Chic became one of the defining acts of the disco era, blending funk, soul and jazz-inflected chords into a sound that was danceable yet musically intricate.

The band's biggest hits, «Le Freak», «Good Times» and «I Want Your Love», topped charts in the late 1970s and became touchstones far beyond disco: the bassline and rhythm guitar of «Good Times» were sampled and interpolated across early hip-hop, most famously in «Rapper's Delight». Rodgers and Edwards also worked as an in-demand production and songwriting team, shaping records for artists such as Sister Sledge and Diana Ross using the same Chic formula of clean, funky grooves.

After Edwards's death in 1996, Nile Rodgers continued to lead the band, later performing as Nile Rodgers & Chic, and remained a hugely influential producer and guitarist working with artists across pop, rock and dance music. Chic's catalogue is considered foundational to disco, funk and the DNA of modern dance-pop and hip-hop production.
