About the artist
Cheb Akil (الشاب عقيل) was an Algerian raï singer known for a smooth, warm voice paired with youthful, danceable production that gave his songs broad appeal among younger listeners. He built his career around raï's blend of traditional Algerian melodic sensibility and modern pop arrangements, becoming one of the genre's prominent figures in the years leading up to his death.
His songs frequently addressed the everyday concerns and emotions of young Algerians, delivered with sincere, direct lyrics rather than abstract poetry, which helped his music resonate quickly with audiences. He released his debut solo album in 2009, followed by a second the following year, and he also recorded a song in support of Algeria's national football team around its participation in the 2010 World Cup.
Cheb Akil relocated to France, where he continued performing for the Arab diaspora community, drawing large and devoted crowds at his concerts. He died in a car accident near Tangier, Morocco, in June 2013, while he was in the country to perform a series of concerts, cutting short the career of one of raï's rising stars.
