Cass Elliot

Cass Elliot, born Ellen Naomi Cohen in Baltimore, was one of the defining voices of American pop music in the 1960s. She began in the Greenwich Village folk scene before co-founding The Big 3, and by 1965 had become the powerhouse alto of The Mamas & the Papas alongside John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty. Her rich, warm voice anchored the group's lush vocal harmonies and helped make songs like «California Dreamin'» and «Monday, Monday» era-defining hits.

As Mama Cass, she stood out not only for her vocal power but for her ability to make cover material entirely her own, most famously her rendition of «Dream a Little Dream of Me», which became her signature. After the group's breakup she pursued a solo career spanning pop, cabaret, and television, recording songs such as «Make Your Own Kind of Music» and «It's Getting Better», and appearing widely on TV variety shows, which showcased a warmth and comic timing beyond music.

Cass Elliot's sound sat at the crossroads of folk-rock and orchestral pop, and her voice remains one of the most recognizable of the era. She died in 1974 at just 32, but her recordings, especially with The Mamas & the Papas, remain central to the folk-pop canon and continue to influence vocal harmony groups today.
