Carole & Tuesday

Carole & Tuesday refers both to the fictional musical duo at the heart of the 2019 anime series of the same name, directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, and to the real-world vocal performers who bring the characters to life. Set on a futuristic Mars where AI composes most of humanity’s music, the show follows two young women — Carole, raised as a refugee, and Tuesday, a runaway from a wealthy family — who bond over a shared desire to write and perform music themselves, becoming a symbol of human creativity resisting algorithmic culture.

The project is notable for being one of the first anime built around original, largely English-language songs performed by real musicians rather than voice actors. Carole’s singing voice is provided by R&B artist Nai Br.XX from Atlanta, while Tuesday’s is performed by Japanese-American singer Celeina Ann. The soundtrack draws on a wide, international pop and R&B palette, with songs such as «The Loneliest Girl», «Kiss Me», and «Someday I’ll Find My Way Home», reflecting collaborations with a broad roster of songwriters and producers spanning American R&B, indie pop, and electronic music traditions.

Because of this real-world musical backbone, Carole & Tuesday functions less like a typical anime soundtrack and more like a genuine pop/R&B album cycle, with its songs performing and being appreciated independently of the series itself, bridging Japanese animation and contemporary international songwriting.
