Capleton

Capleton, born Clifton Bailey in the parish of St. Mary, Jamaica, is one of dancehall and reggae's most influential voices, known for his fierce delivery and deep commitment to Rastafarian teachings. He moved to Kingston at 18 to pursue music, breaking through with sound system performances before scoring an early hit with the raunchy «Bumbo-Red» in the late 1980s.

Shortly after his debut, Capleton embraced Rastafari and shifted his artistry toward conscious, spiritually charged lyrics centered on the teachings of Marcus Garvey and Haile Selassie I, earning him the nickname «The Prophet.» This transformation from slack dancehall lyricism to militant, roots-oriented messaging marked a defining arc in his career and influenced a generation of artists who followed a similar path from dancehall slackness to Rasta consciousness.

His rapid-fire chanting style, delivered over hard-hitting riddims, made him a defining voice of the «fyah» era of dancehall in the 1990s, with hits addressing social justice, spirituality, and resistance.
