Candan Erçetin

Candan Erçetin is a Turkish singer born on February 10, 1963, in Kırklareli, into a family with Balkan immigrant roots. She was educated at Galatasaray High School in Istanbul before studying Classical Archaeology at Istanbul University, and she trained in voice at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory, completing her studies there in 1991. Her early public exposure came in 1986, when she represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo as a member of the group Klips ve Onlar with the song «Halley», earning the country's best result to that point.

After a period of postgraduate study in Vienna, Erçetin returned to Turkey and worked for years in television and teaching before establishing herself as a solo recording artist. Her sound blends Turkish pop with folk-influenced melody and, at times, jazz-tinged phrasing, drawing on her classical vocal training to give her recordings a polished, expressive delivery. Songs such as «Melek», «Yalan», «Şehir» and «Bahar» became staples of Turkish pop radio.

Over a long career she built a reputation as one of Turkey's most versatile vocalists, moving comfortably between romantic ballads and more upbeat, rhythmically driven pop. Her academic background in archaeology and her conservatory training set her apart from many contemporaries, giving her music a literate, carefully crafted quality that has kept her relevant across decades of Turkish popular music.
