About the artist

Cameo is an American funk band formed in New York City in 1974, originally performing as the New York City Players before adopting the Cameo name. Led by Larry Blackmon, the group evolved through the late 1970s and 1980s from a large horn-driven funk ensemble into a leaner, more electronic-influenced act that helped define the sound of 1980s funk and early hip-hop-adjacent R&B.

Cameo's commercial and cultural peak came with the 1986 album «Word Up!», whose title track and «Candy» became massive crossover hits, driven by Blackmon's distinctive red codpiece image, deep vocal delivery, and sparse, synth-and-bass-heavy production. «Word Up!» in particular has remained a heavily sampled and referenced touchstone in funk and hip-hop.

Over a career spanning multiple decades and numerous lineup changes, Cameo helped bridge classic horn-based funk with the drum-machine-driven sound that would influence later R&B and hip-hop production. Their catalog, including tracks like «Single Life» and «She's Strange», remains a foundational reference point for funk revival and sampling culture.
