Бутырка (Butyrka)

Butyrka is a Russian shanson group formed in 2001, its name inspired by the Butyrka pre-trial detention facility in Moscow, referencing an escape by inmates that occurred the same year. Founded around keyboardist and songwriter Oleg Simonov, the band quickly found an audience through the Russkiy Shanson label and became one of the genre's most recognizable acts of the 2000s with their debut record.

The group's sound is built on the classic shanson formula: melodic, accordion- and guitar-tinged arrangements paired with narrative lyrics about prison life, love, loss and street realities, delivered by a rotating cast of lead vocalists over the years. Songs like «Тает снег» and «Кольщик» became staples of the genre, blending sentimental balladry with harder-edged storytelling typical of Russian criminal-themed pop.

Over two decades Butyrka has released numerous albums and maintained a steady live and recording career, cementing its place alongside other major shanson acts of the post-Soviet era. The band's lineup has evolved over time while keeping its core sound and thematic focus intact, making it a lasting name within the Russian-language shanson and blatnaya pesnya tradition.
