Burt Bacharach

Burt Bacharach (1928–2023) was an American composer whose sophisticated, jazz-inflected melodies made him one of the defining pop songwriters of the twentieth century. Classically trained, with teachers including Darius Milhaud, he cut his teeth arranging for dance bands and touring as musical director for Marlene Dietrich before turning his attention fully to songwriting. What set Bacharach apart was his willingness to break pop conventions: unusual time signatures, unexpected key changes and complex chord voicings, all wrapped in melodies so graceful that listeners rarely noticed the complexity underneath.

His defining partnership was with lyricist Hal David, and together with singer Dionne Warwick they created one of the great songwriting-and-performance trios in pop history, producing standards such as «Walk On By», «(They Long to Be) Close to You» and «What the World Needs Now Is Love». His songs were recorded across genres and generations, from Dusty Springfield's «The Look of Love» to Aretha Franklin's take on «I Say a Little Prayer», cementing his melodies as part of the American songbook.

Bacharach's music found a second wave of fame in the late 1990s through films like My Best Friend's Wedding and the Austin Powers series, introducing his sound to new audiences, and his late-career collaboration with Elvis Costello on the album Painted from Memory proved his songwriting instincts remained sharp decades into his career. Over his lifetime he won six Grammy Awards and three Academy Awards, leaving behind a catalog that remains a benchmark for melodic and harmonic sophistication in popular song.
