Buena Vista Social Club

Buena Vista Social Club is a collective of veteran Cuban musicians brought together in 1996 by American guitarist Ry Cooder, along with Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos González, to revive the traditional son cubano and other pre-revolutionary Cuban styles that had faded from popularity. Named after a members-only club in Havana where many of the musicians once performed in their youth, the project reunited legendary figures such as singer Compay Segundo, pianist Rubén González and singer Ibrahim Ferrer, several of whom were in their eighties.

The group's self-titled 1997 album became a global phenomenon, introducing son, bolero and danzón to listeners far outside Cuba and earning a Grammy Award. Songs like «Chan Chan», «Dos Gardenias» and «Veinte Años» showcase the ensemble's warm interplay of acoustic guitars, tres, piano, percussion and soulful vocals, rooted in decades of pre-revolutionary Cuban dance-hall tradition.

The project's success was documented in Wim Wenders' acclaimed 1999 documentary, which brought worldwide attention to its aging performers. Though many of the original musicians have since passed away, the Buena Vista Social Club name continues through related ensembles and touring projects, and its recordings remain a defining introduction to traditional Cuban music for international audiences.
