Brown Bird

Brown Bird was an Americana and folk band centered in Rhode Island, formed in 2003 by David Lamb and MorganEve Swain. Their music sat on the darker, more foreboding edge of Americana, drawing on 1960s-70s psych-rock, Romani music, and post-metal alongside folk roots, delivered through ominous, unapologetically stark lyrics about the wickedness in the world.

The band's lineup evolved over the years. It began with Lamb, Swain, cellist Jerusha Robinson, and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Robinson, but by 2009 the Robinsons had departed, leaving Lamb on vocals and Swain on fiddle joined by Mike Samos on lap-steel and dobro. After Samos left roughly a year later, Brown Bird continued as a duo of Lamb and Swain, whose interplay of raw vocals, strings, and percussion became the group's defining sound on songs like «Fingers to the Bone», «Blood of Angels», and «Danger and Dread».

David Lamb died of leukemia on April 5, 2014. MorganEve Swain later completed and released the band's final album, "Axis Mundi" (2015), drawing on songwriting the two had done together after his diagnosis. Tracks such as «Seven Hells» and «Down to the River» remain emblematic of the band's uncompromising, shadow-laced take on American roots music.
