Bronski Beat

Bronski Beat were a British synthpop trio formed in London in 1983, made up of Jimmy Somerville, Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek. All three members were openly gay at a time when this was rare in pop music, and their songs — especially the 1984 debut album The Age of Consent — carried explicit political commentary on gay rights and homophobia alongside their glossy synth-pop sound.

Their breakthrough single «Smalltown Boy» became a landmark of 1980s dance-pop: a pulsing, melancholic track built around Somerville's distinctive falsetto, telling the story of a young gay man leaving home. It remains their only US Billboard Hot 100 hit and one of the defining singles of the era, alongside follow-ups like «Why?» and «Hit That Perfect Beat».

Somerville left in 1985 to form the Communards before going solo, and was replaced by John Foster, with whom the group continued scoring UK and European hits through 1986. Bronski Beat cycled through further vocalists before disbanding in the mid-1990s; Steve Bronski later revived the group. The band's fusion of synthpop craftsmanship with unapologetic queer identity influenced generations of electronic and dance artists.
