Boney M.

Boney M. is a Euro-Caribbean vocal group created by German record producer Frank Farian in 1976, based in West Germany. The classic line-up featured Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat, and dancer-performer Bobby Farrell from Aruba, with much of the group’s actual lead studio vocals recorded by Farian himself alongside Mitchell.

Boney M. became one of the defining acts of the late-1970s disco era, blending Caribbean rhythms, European studio production and infectious pop hooks into a run of massive international hits including «Daddy Cool», «Ma Baker», «Sunny», «Rasputin», «Mary’s Boy Child – Oh My Lord» and «Rivers of Babylon». Their sound combined lush orchestral disco arrangements with playful, theatrical performances, and their singles topped charts across Europe.

Despite the group never releasing an album in the US market during its peak years, Boney M. sold tens of millions of records worldwide and remains one of the best-selling music acts to emerge from continental Europe. Since the 1980s, various line-ups under the Boney M. name have continued to tour, keeping the group’s catalog of holiday and disco standards in continuous circulation.
