Bobby Darin

Bobby Darin, born Walden Robert Cassotto on May 14, 1936, in the Bronx, New York, was one of the most versatile entertainers of mid-20th-century American popular music. He broke through in 1958 with the novelty rock and roll hit «Splish Splash», but quickly proved he was far more than a teen idol, moving fluidly across rock, jazz, folk and country. His sophisticated, swinging interpretations of «Mack the Knife» and «Beyond the Sea» became defining standards of the American songbook and remain among the most recognizable vocal performances of their era.

Darin’s sound married a crooner’s polish with a jazz singer’s rhythmic freedom, and he was also an accomplished songwriter, penning material both for himself and for other performers of the day. He extended his talents into film acting, earning an Academy Award nomination for Captain Newman, M.D. in 1963, and later used his platform for political and social causes, notably supporting Robert F. Kennedy and releasing protest material on his own label, Direction Records.

Living with a serious heart condition from childhood, Darin approached his career with an urgency that shaped his restless creative range. He died in 1973 at age 37, but in barely fifteen years of recording left behind a body of work spanning multiple genres that continues to influence pop and jazz vocalists.
