Black Lace

Black Lace are an English pop group best remembered as one of the defining acts of the 1980s novelty party-song genre. Formed in Yorkshire, the duo built their reputation less on chart artistry than on songs engineered for mass participation: simple, repetitive choruses paired with dance routines that anyone at a wedding or club night could pick up in seconds.

Their breakthrough came with «Superman» in 1983, but it was «Agadoo» in 1984 that turned them into a fixture of British popular culture, its call-and-response chorus and fruit-themed dance moves becoming inescapable at celebrations across the country. Follow-ups such as «Do the Conga» and «Hokey Cokey» extended the same formula, cementing Black Lace's identity as purveyors of communal, dance-along pop rather than conventional songwriting.
