Black Box Recorder

Black Box Recorder were an English trio formed in London in the late 1990s, bringing together vocalist Sarah Nixey with songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Luke Haines, previously of The Auteurs, and John Moore, formerly of The Jesus and Mary Chain. Their music sat between wry indie pop and cooler, trip-hop-inflected arrangements, built around Nixey's detached, deadpan delivery of lyrics that were often dark, satirical and pointed at British social mores.

The band's lyrics frequently skewered middle- and upper-class English life with a mix of black humor and unease, a tone that ran through songs like «Child Psychology» and «England Made Me». Despite this uncompromising sensibility, they found mainstream chart success in 1998 with the single «The Facts of Life», which reached the UK top twenty and became their best-known song.

Over several albums, Black Box Recorder maintained a distinctive identity within British alternative pop, valued for its literate, sardonic songwriting and Nixey's cool, controlled vocal presence, standing apart from the more earnest Britpop sounds of the era.
