About the artist
Black was the stage name of Colin Vearncombe, an English singer-songwriter from Liverpool who became known internationally in the mid-1980s. His deep, mournful baritone voice and moody, atmospheric pop-rock songwriting set him apart from the brighter synth-pop sound dominating the UK charts at the time, giving his work a more introspective, romantic character rooted in soul and torch-song traditions.
His signature song, «Wonderful Life», became a slow-burning worldwide hit, eventually charting across Europe years after its initial release and remaining his most enduring work. He built a loyal following, particularly on the continent, with a catalogue that mixed melancholic ballads and lush arrangements, drawing on influences from soul, jazz and classic pop songcraft rather than following passing trends.
Vearncombe continued recording and touring under the Black name for decades, releasing music independently after his major-label years and maintaining a dedicated audience, especially in Germany and other parts of Europe where his brand of romantic, brooding pop found lasting appeal. He died in 2016 following injuries from a car accident, but «Wonderful Life» remains a staple of 1980s retrospectives and continues to introduce new listeners to his distinctive voice and songwriting.
