About the artist
Björn Afzelius was a Swedish singer-songwriter, author and one of the most prominent voices of the Swedish progg and visbaserad rock movement from the 1970s onward. He first rose to prominence as one half of the duo Nynningen with Mikael Wiehe, before launching a prolific solo career that made him one of Sweden's most beloved troubadours.
His music combined folk- and rock-based songwriting with poetic Swedish lyrics dealing with love, freedom, political engagement and solidarity, reflecting his outspoken left-wing and humanist convictions. His songs, often delivered with warm, emotive melodies and a strong narrative sense, made him a central figure in Swedish popular song alongside contemporaries like Mikael Wiehe and Cornelis Vreeswijk.
Among his best-known songs are «Tusen bitar», «Sång till friheten» and «Ikaros», which remain staples of Swedish song culture. Over several decades he released numerous acclaimed solo albums and continued to tour and record until his death in 1999, leaving a lasting influence on generations of Swedish singer-songwriters.
