About the artist
Bill Wurtz is an American musician, animator and video artist known for a distinctive style that blends deadpan narration, catchy lo-fi songs and colorful, surreal graphics. He first built a following posting short musical jingles on Vine and YouTube, often only a few seconds long, before expanding into longer original songs and videos released on his own website and channel.
Wurtz became widely known for his educational-style videos «history of japan» and «history of the entire world, i guess», which combine rapid-fire historical narration with his signature musical cues and went viral well beyond his existing fanbase. His music itself spans playful pop, electronic and rap-inflected styles, often built around simple hooks, unusual chord choices and a dry, conversational vocal delivery.
Beyond his historical explainers, Wurtz has released dozens of songs and videos independently, cultivating a cult following drawn to his idiosyncratic humor and DIY aesthetic. He largely operates outside the traditional music industry, self-releasing work directly to fans online, and in 2016 received a Shorty Award for «Best in Weird» recognizing his singular internet presence.
