About the artist

Bill Withers was an American singer, songwriter, and musician whose warm baritone and plainspoken lyricism made him one of the most enduring voices in soul and R&B. Born in West Virginia, he spent nine years in the U.S. Navy before moving to Los Angeles in 1967, where he self-financed demo recordings that eventually caught the attention of Clarence Avant of Sussex Records. His late start in the music industry, combined with a grounded, working-class perspective, gave his songwriting an unusual authenticity that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

His 1971 debut album, «Just As I Am», produced by Booker T. Jones, yielded the Grammy-winning «Ain’t No Sunshine» and the enduring «Grandma’s Hands», immediately establishing him as a major new voice. The 1972 follow-up, «Still Bill», produced two of his most iconic songs, «Lean on Me» and «Use Me», both of which became deeply embedded in American popular culture for their emotional directness and gospel-inflected soul grooves.

Withers continued to write career-defining hits, including «Lovely Day» and the 1981 collaboration «Just the Two of Us» with Grover Washington Jr., co-written with Ralph MacDonald and William Salter, which earned him a Grammy for Best R&B Song. A 1987 cover of «Lean on Me» by Club Nouveau brought him a third Grammy in the same category. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, cementing his legacy as one of soul music’s most quietly influential songwriters.
