Bic Runga

Bic Runga is a New Zealand singer-songwriter born in Christchurch in 1976, of mixed Māori, Chinese and Malaysian heritage. She emerged in the mid-1990s and became one of New Zealand's defining pop voices with her 1997 debut album «Drive», whose lead single «Sway» brought her international attention and remains her best-known song.

Her style blends melodic pop with folk and soft-rock textures, built around warm, intimate songwriting and a distinctive, breathy vocal tone. Songs such as «Something Good», «Listening for the Weather» and «Beautiful Collision» show a consistent focus on introspective, romantically tinged lyricism delivered with understated arrangements rather than big pop production.

Over a career spanning several albums, Runga has remained a central figure in New Zealand music, valued for her songwriting craft and for helping put New Zealand pop on the international map in the late 1990s and 2000s.
