About the artist
Beyond is a Hong Kong rock band formed in 1983, widely regarded as the most influential Cantopop-era rock act to come out of the city. Starting out on the underground circuit, the group broke into the mainstream in 1987 and built a following across Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, mainland China, and overseas Chinese communities. Their sound fused hard rock and heavy-metal guitar work with Cantonese lyrics at a time when English-language rock dominated the local underground, effectively repackaging that sound for a mass audience.
The band wrote, arranged, and often produced their own material, with lyrics addressing social commentary, idealism versus reality, peace, and reflections on the wider world rather than typical love-song fare. Songs such as «海闊天空», «光輝歲月», «真的愛妳», and «喜歡你» became era-defining anthems still sung across generations. Frontman Wong Ka Kui's distinctive voice and songwriting were central to the band's identity.
In 1993, Wong Ka Kui died at 31 following an accident during a television show taping in Tokyo, a loss that reshaped the band profoundly. The remaining members, Paul Wong, Wong Ka Keung, and Yip Sai Wing, continued performing and recording before officially disbanding in 2005 after a farewell tour, closing one of Cantopop's most enduring chapters.
