Benjamin Clementine

Benjamin Clementine is an English singer-songwriter, pianist, poet and multi-instrumentalist born and raised in London. As a teenager he left England for Paris, where he lived homeless for a period and began busking on the streets and in the metro, developing the raw, theatrical performing style that would later define his live shows. That period of hardship and self-discovery fed directly into his songwriting, which mixes classical piano, spoken word and jazz-inflected phrasing with an unmistakably dramatic, sometimes operatic delivery.

His 2015 debut album «At Least for Now» announced a singular voice in British music, blending chamber-pop arrangements with confessional, poetic lyrics on songs like «Condolence», «Nemesis», «London» and «Cornerstone». The record won the Mercury Prize, cementing Clementine's reputation as one of the most original artists to emerge from the UK art-pop and contemporary classical scene that year. His follow-up, «I Tell a Fly» (2017), pushed further into avant-garde territory, adding harpsichord and more experimental structures on tracks such as «Phantom of Aleppoville» and «Jupiter», trading some of the debut's intimacy for a bolder, stranger sonic palette.

Clementine's work sits at the intersection of art pop, chamber music and spoken-word tradition, drawing comparisons to figures like Nina Simone for its emotional intensity and to classical composers for its structural ambition. Rather than following pop conventions, he has built a body of work defined by unpredictability, theatricality and a willingness to let personal history — including his years of homelessness — shape the music directly.
