About the artist

Beats International was a British group formed around 1989-1990 by Norman Cook, formerly the bassist of The Housemartins, alongside vocalist Lindy Layton. The project marked Cook's turn toward dance and sample-based production ahead of his later career as Fatboy Slim, blending British pop songwriting with dub, hip-hop breaks, and heavy use of sampling — a hallmark of the late-80s and early-90s UK dance underground.

The group's breakout hit «Dub Be Good to Me», built around a bassline lifted from The S.O.S. Band's «Just Be Good to Me» and the rhythm of The Clash's «Guns of Brixton», topped the UK Singles Chart in 1990 and became one of the defining sample-based pop records of its era. The debut album «Let Them Eat Bingo» carried that same eclectic, sample-heavy approach across tracks like «Won't Talk About It» and «Just a Dream», mixing dub basslines with pop hooks and social commentary.

Beats International were short-lived, releasing a second album, «Excursion on the Version», before Cook moved on to other projects and eventually reinvented himself as Fatboy Slim. Despite the brief run, the group holds a notable place in UK dance history as an early, high-profile example of chart-topping sample culture, and «Dub Be Good to Me» remains their most enduring legacy.
