About the artist
Banda Neira is an Indonesian folk-pop duo formed by Ananda Badudu and Rara Sekar. What began as a casual side project between the two songwriters grew into a distinctive body of work built on gentle acoustic arrangements, warm vocal harmonies and lyrics with a strong literary sensibility.
The duo became especially known for setting Indonesian poetry to music, most notably their musikalisasi puisi (poetry-set-to-music) renditions such as «Derai-Derai Cemara» based on a poem by Chairil Anwar, and «Rindu» based on a poem by Subagio Sastrowardoyo. This approach placed them within a long-running Indonesian tradition of merging poetry and song, while their original compositions, including «Sampai Jadi Debu» and «Hujan di Mimpi», showed the same introspective, literate songwriting applied to their own words.
Banda Neira's sound sits at the intersection of folk and soft pop, favoring intimate arrangements over big production, and their work has resonated strongly with listeners drawn to thoughtful, poetry-adjacent Indonesian indie music. Their catalog remains a touchstone for the country's literary-minded folk scene.
