Bananarama

Bananarama are a British pop trio formed in London in 1981 by school friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward. Emerging from the post-punk and new wave scene, they built their sound around bright synth-pop hooks, catchy group vocals and a breezy, danceable energy that made them fixtures of 1980s chart radio. Their early records were shaped by collaborations with Fun Boy Three and producers such as Swain and Jolley, before they found their signature sound working with the Stock Aitken Waterman production team.

The group scored major hits including «Cruel Summer», «Venus», «I Heard a Rumour» and «Robert De Niro's Waiting...», with «Venus» topping the US Billboard Hot 100. Their run of hits placed them among the most commercially successful female groups in British pop history, and for a time they held a Guinness World Record for the highest number of chart entries by a female group.

Siobhan Fahey departed in 1988 and was briefly replaced by Jacquie O'Sullivan, after which Dallin and Woodward continued as a duo from 1991 onward, still recording and performing together decades later. Bananarama are remembered as pioneers who wrote and shaped much of their own material at a time when girl groups were rarely credited as songwriters, influencing later generations of pop acts.
