Bamboo

Bamboo is a Filipino alternative rock band formed in Manila in 2002, fronted by vocalist Bamboo Mañalac, with bassist Nathan Azarcon, guitarist Ira Cruz and drummer Vic Mercado rounding out the classic lineup. Mañalac had already made his name as the singer of the pioneering Pinoy rock band Rivermaya before starting this new project under his own nickname, bringing with him a strong sense of melody and a raspy, powerful voice that became the band's signature.

The group quickly became one of the defining acts of Philippine rock in the 2000s, blending grunge-influenced guitar work with anthemic, radio-friendly hooks. Songs such as «Noypi», «Truth» and their widely covered rendition of «Hallelujah» showcase the range between socially conscious rock anthems and more intimate, emotive material. Tracks like «Mr. Clay» and «Umagang Kay Ganda» further cemented their presence on Filipino radio and television.

Over the years Bamboo has remained a touchstone act for OPM (original Pilipino music) rock, influencing younger bands while continuing to perform and record with various lineup configurations. Their catalog is frequently revisited in retrospectives of Philippine rock's golden era.
