Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds

The Lightning Seeds are an English alternative rock band formed in Liverpool in 1989, built around singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ian Broudie, previously known for his work with Big in Japan and as a producer for bands such as Echo & the Bunnymen and The Fall. The group became known for melodic, guitar-driven pop-rock with warm, hook-laden production, scoring UK hits through the 1990s with songs like «Pure» and «Life of Riley».

Their most enduring legacy, however, comes from a one-off collaboration outside the band's usual catalogue. In 1996, ahead of the European Championship hosted in England, Broudie teamed up with comedians and broadcasters Frank Skinner and David Baddiel — co-hosts of the cult football show Fantasy Football League — to write «Three Lions», an anthem capturing both the hope and heartbreak of English football fandom around the phrase Football's Coming Home.

The song became a cultural phenomenon, topping the UK charts and being re-recorded for later tournaments, including a 1998 World Cup version and later reworkings tied to England's national team. Decades on, «Three Lions» remains one of the most recognisable football anthems in the world, sung at stadiums and pubs whenever England competes in a major tournament, and it defines the trio's collaborative legacy far beyond their individual careers.
