About the artist

Australian Crawl were an Australian rock band formed in 1978 near Melbourne, part of the wave of Australian pub rock and radio-friendly rock acts that dominated the country’s charts in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Fronted by James Reyne, the band built its sound around melodic hooks, jangly guitar work, and Reyne’s distinctive baritone vocals, distinguishing them from harder-edged pub rock contemporaries with a smoother, more polished pop-rock approach.

The band broke through with «Beautiful People» in 1979 and cemented its status with the debut album The Boys Light Up in 1980. Subsequent albums Sirocco and Sons of Beaches both reached number one on the Australian charts, while their 1983 single «Reckless (Don’t Be So...)», taken from the Semantics EP, became their only chart-topping single and remains their best-known song. The band underwent several lineup changes over the years, including changes in the drum and guitar/vocal positions, before eventually disbanding after their final album, Between a Rock and a Hard Place.

Australian Crawl’s catalogue, including tracks like «Errol», «Hoochie Gucci Fiorucci Mama», and «Oh No Not You Again», helped define the sound of Australian rock radio in the early 1980s. Their contribution to Australian music was later recognised with induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
