Âşık Mahzuni Şerif

Âşık Mahzuni Şerif (1938–2002) was one of the most influential Turkish âşık (folk minstrel) poets and singers of the 20th century, born in the Maraş region of Anatolia. Rooted in the Alevi bardic tradition, he carried forward the centuries-old practice of the traveling saz-playing poet while giving it a sharply modern, often politically and socially critical voice. His lyrics addressed poverty, injustice, migration, and rural hardship in Turkey, earning him a reputation as a folk philosopher as much as a musician.

His sound is built around the bağlama (saz), simple modal melodies, and a rough, emotionally direct vocal delivery that prioritizes the poetic text over ornamentation. Songs such as «Mevlam İki Göz Vermiş», «Deli Miyim Ben» and «İşte Gidiyorum Çeşmi Siyahım» became staples of Turkish folk repertoire, blending humor, protest, and spiritual reflection. He is frequently grouped with contemporaries like Âşık Veysel and Neşet Ertaş as a pillar of 20th-century Anatolian minstrel music, though his tone was often more biting and satirical.

Beyond recordings, Mahzuni Şerif was known for his prolific poetic output and his role in keeping the âşık tradition relevant to modern Turkish audiences, influencing generations of folk and protest musicians who followed him.
