Aqua

Aqua is a Danish-Norwegian pop group formed in Copenhagen in the mid-1990s, fronted by Norwegian singer Lene Nystrøm alongside Danish members René Dif, Søren Rasted and Claus Norreen. The group became a defining act of the bubblegum-pop era, blending Eurodance beats, cartoonish vocal interplay and hyper-catchy hooks into a sound that was both a throwback to novelty pop and a template for the dance-pop that followed.

Their breakthrough came with the debut album Aquarium, whose lead single «Barbie Girl» turned into a global phenomenon, topping charts across Europe and Oceania and later drawing legal attention from the Mattel toy company over its use of the Barbie name. Follow-up singles such as «Doctor Jones», «Turn Back Time» and «My Oh My» kept the group at the top of European charts through the late 1990s.

After a second album, Aquarius, Aqua disbanded in the early 2000s before reuniting for occasional tours and new material in later years, including the album Megalomania. Their playful, hyper-produced style remains one of the most recognizable sounds of 1990s pop and continues to influence dance-pop production today.
