April March

April March is the stage name of American singer Elinor Blake, known for elegant, retro-styled pop often sung in French. Drawing on the pre-rock era and the yé-yé sound of 1960s France, her music revives a vintage European sensibility filtered through an American indie pop perspective, setting her apart from most of her contemporaries.

After time in several bands, she launched her solo career as April March with the 1992 release ‘Voo Doo Doll’, followed by ‘Gainsbourgsion!’ in 1994, which paid homage to the songwriting world of Serge Gainsbourg. Her 2002 album Triggers further refined her sound, pairing polished production with nostalgic, French-pop-inflected songwriting.

April March reached a much wider audience in 2007 when ‘Chick Habit’, her English-language reworking of Gainsbourg's ‘Laisse Tomber les Filles’, was featured in Quentin Tarantino's film Death Proof. Alongside her music career, she has also worked successfully as an animator, giving her a distinctive dual creative identity.
