About the artist
Antônio Carlos Jobim, widely known as Tom Jobim, was a Brazilian composer, pianist, guitarist and singer who became the central architect of bossa nova, the genre that reshaped Brazilian popular music in the late 1950s and went on to conquer the world. Working alongside poets and musicians such as Vinícius de Moraes and João Gilberto, he fused the harmonic sophistication of jazz and French impressionist composers like Debussy with the syncopated pulse of samba, producing a sound that was intimate, understated and endlessly melodic.
His songwriting catalogue includes some of the most recorded compositions in popular music history, among them «Garota de Ipanema» (known internationally as «The Girl From Ipanema»), «Corcovado», «Wave», «Triste» and «Águas de Março» («Waters of March»), a piece often cited as one of the finest Brazilian songs ever written. His 1963 collaboration with João Gilberto and American saxophonist Stan Getz, the album Getz/Gilberto, brought bossa nova to a mass international audience and won major Grammy recognition.
Jobim's singing voice was soft, conversational and never showy, matching the gentle harmonic movement of his songs rather than competing with it. He continued composing and performing into the 1980s and 1990s, collaborating with artists across generations, and remains the towering reference point for anyone approaching Brazilian popular music, jazz-bossa fusion or the art of understated songwriting.
