About the artist
Antonio Aguilar (1919–2007) was one of the most celebrated Mexican singers and actors of the twentieth century, a towering figure in ranchera and mariachi music whose career spanned more than five decades. Born in Villanueva, Zacatecas, he became known both for his powerful, traditional vocal style and for his extensive career in charro films, helping keep the ranchera and mariachi tradition alive on both record and screen.
His discography includes hundreds of recordings of classic rancheras and corridos, with songs like «Cuatro milpas», «Un puño de tierra» and «Triste recuerdo» becoming standards of Mexican popular music. Aguilar was renowned for his equestrian showmanship as well, staging elaborate live spectacles that combined singing with horsemanship, and he helped popularize the genre internationally through his prolific film and recording output.
Beyond his solo career, Aguilar was part of a prominent musical family, with his wife Flor Silvestre and sons Pepe Aguilar and Antonio Aguilar Jr. continuing the ranchera tradition. He remains a foundational figure in Mexican popular culture, remembered as a defender of traditional ranchera music and one of its most authoritative interpreters.
