About the artist
Animal Collective is an American experimental pop band formed in Baltimore, Maryland, whose core members grew up together in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. The group is built around Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb) and Geologist (Brian Weitz), who perform under invented stage names and have shifted lineups from album to album, sometimes working as a duo or trio rather than the full quartet.
Emerging in the early 2000s, the band became a defining voice of the psych-pop and freak-folk revival, layering Brian Wilson-inspired vocal harmonies over tribal percussion, tape loops, electronics and unconventional song structures. Their sound moved from dense, abrasive early experiments toward the sun-drenched, sample-heavy textures of «Feels» and, most prominently, «Merriweather Post Pavilion», the 2009 album built around tracks like «My Girls» and «Summertime Clothes» that brought them widespread critical acclaim and a broader audience.
Beyond the group format, members have pursued acclaimed solo work, most notably Panda Bear, while the collective itself has continued releasing albums such as «Centipede Hz» and «Painting With», maintaining a reputation for restless reinvention and a devoted, cult-like fanbase built on constant sonic experimentation and unpredictable live shows.
