About the artist
Angela Lansbury (1925–2022) was a British-American actress and singer whose career spanned more than seven decades across film, stage, and television. Born in London and later relocating to the United States, she first gained recognition in Hollywood films of the 1940s, including «Gaslight» and «The Picture of Dorian Gray», before becoming one of the most celebrated performers in American musical theatre and television.
As a singer, Lansbury was a defining voice of Broadway, most famously originating the role of Mrs. Lovett in Stephen Sondheim's «Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street», delivering darkly comic numbers such as «The Worst Pies in London» with a theatrical wit that became her signature. She also starred in «Mame» and other stage musicals, earning multiple Tony Awards, and later reached new generations of listeners as the voice of Mrs. Potts in Disney's animated «Beauty and the Beast», performing the title song «Beauty and the Beast» with warmth that made it an enduring standard.
Beyond music, she was widely known for the long-running television series «Murder, She Wrote», but her vocal performances remain central to her legacy, prized for their theatrical clarity, emotional precision, and ability to shift between comedy and pathos within a single song.
