Andrea Gibson

Andrea Gibson (they/them) was an American poet and performer, celebrated as one of the leading figures of spoken-word and slam poetry in the 2000s and 2010s. Raised in Calais, Maine, Gibson rose to prominence through the Denver, Colorado spoken-word scene and became one of the first poets to win the Denver Grand Slam championship multiple times, later winning the first-ever Woman of the World Poetry Slam title in 2008.

Gibson's work moved fluidly between page and stage, addressing gender identity, queerness, mental health, love, and social justice with a directness that resonated far beyond traditional poetry audiences. Their recordings, including albums like Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns and Flower Boy, brought spoken word into a musical, almost song-like space, and their live performances became touchstones for LGBTQ+ and activist communities.

In later years, after being diagnosed with cancer, Gibson wrote extensively and openly about illness, mortality, and love, work that reached an even wider audience and was later the subject of a documentary. Gibson passed away in 2025. Their poetry remains widely shared and taught, remembered for its emotional honesty and its role in bringing spoken-word poetry to mainstream attention.
