André Rieu

André Rieu is a Dutch violinist and conductor, born on 1 October 1949 in Maastricht, the city where he still lives and performs. Trained classically from childhood, he built his career around a singular idea: bringing waltz and light classical repertoire to mass audiences through grand, theatrical concerts rather than traditional recital halls.

In 1987 he founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra, an ensemble named after the Viennese waltz king whose music remains central to Rieu's repertoire, alongside opera arias, folk melodies, and popular classical standards. His concerts are known for elaborate staging, period costumes, and an emphasis on spectacle and emotional accessibility, which has made him one of the best-selling touring artists in the world despite working almost entirely outside the pop and rock mainstream.
