About the artist
Amit Kumar Ganguly is an Indian playback singer, actor and music composer, and the eldest son of legendary singer Kishore Kumar. He built his career primarily within the Hindi film industry, becoming one of the most prolific voices of Bollywood cinema from the 1970s through the early 1990s. His close collaboration with composer R.D. Burman produced hundreds of songs, cementing his reputation as one of the era's most versatile playback vocalists.
Beyond Hindi film music, Amit Kumar has lent his voice to songs in Bengali, Bhojpuri, Odia, Assamese, Marathi and Konkani, reflecting the breadth of India's regional cinema and his own linguistic range. Tracks such as «Bade Acche Lagte Hai», «Bole Chudiyan» and «Laila O Laila» showcase the melodic, emotionally expressive style he brought to romantic and dance numbers alike, often carrying the light, buoyant phrasing inherited from his father's musical lineage.
Following R.D. Burman's death in 1994, Amit Kumar largely stepped back from playback singing, citing concerns about the direction of film music composition, and redirected his energy toward live orchestral performances. He also founded his own music production company, Kumar Brothers Music, continuing to shape his artistic legacy outside the studio system that had defined his earlier career.
